Donald Trump has announced that the U.S. officially recognizes occupied Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and will move the U.S. embassy to the city. This move grants legitimacy to Israel’s illegal and brutal military occupation and ignores its 330,000+ Palestinian residents.
Such a move legitimizes Jerusalem’s current separate-and-unequal – otherwise known as apartheid – regime between Israeli Jews and Palestinians, which discriminates against Palestinians in municipal planning services, taxation, housing and education, and is designed to demographically engineer a permanent Jewish majority.
Moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the whole city is the equivalent of the U.S. giving a green light to longstanding Israeli government policies of dispossession/ethnic cleansing of Palestinian Jerusalemites from the city. Israel violates the Fourth Geneva Convention daily through its home demolitions (over lack of permits or as collective punishment), stripping residency status, the aparthied wall, lack of municipal services, and allowing settlers to seize property without consequences.
Further, this move is tantamount to recognition of Israel’s unilateral annexation, a violation of international law. Jerusalem has long been an international city, holy to many religions, and the international community and international law consider it to be occupied territory. Finally, recognizing Jerusalem as part of Israel would reverse decades of official U.S. policy not to recognize the sovereignty of any country over any part of Jerusalem until a permanent Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement is reached.
This move is but another example of Trump emboldening Israel’s extreme right-wing government and settler movement, and drives home the shared values of Trump and Netanyahu’s right-wing governments, both of which incite and exploit racism, xenophobia, and fear for political gain.
**We call on all concerned individuals to take a stand for the Palestinians, still occupied, still violently forced from their land, and still the victims of the shameful support of the US and western governments. Join the ‘ Stop Trump, Protect Jerusalem, Support Peace’ protest this Saturday December 9 at 12 noon at Centennial Olympic Park and Marietta Streets, Atlanta.**
