The Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), an Indigenous Lenca organization made up of 200 Lenca communities in Honduras, has issued a call for protests at Honduran embassies and consulates around the world on June 15, 2016, to demand justice for Berta Cáceres
Berta, a co-founder and coordinator of COPINH, was assassinated in March 2016. Several of those charged for Berta’s murder have ties to the Honduran military, including Active Major Mariano Diaz Chavez, who is reported to have been trained by the U.S. Rangers in an elite course for Jungle and Nocturnal Operations. The case of Berta’s assassination illustrates that the U.S. continues to support military and economic policies that are forcing people to flee their country.
