When Gen. David Petraeus, commander in charge of the Iraq and Afghanistan occupations, spoke at Georgia Tech’s Ferst Theater, fourteen activists stood in silence with their backs to him, until they were removed from the 1,100-person theater. Local television covered the protest.

3/19/09 Atlanta Says NO to War
Led by Iraq and Vietnam veterans, 150 protesters chanting “We need jobs and education, not wars and occupation!” marched from WoodruffPark to the CNNCenter. In solidarity with Muntazer al-Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist sentenced to three years in prison for throwing his shoes at Pres. Bush, marchers threw shoes at an effigy of Bush. They repeated al-Zaidi’s words, “This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq,” and called for Bush administration officials to be held accountable for the millions of deaths and grave injuries caused by the U.S. invasion. Afterward, about 30 young people held up traffic for 10 minutes by lying down in the busy Marietta Street intersection in front of CNN.
1/3/09 Gaza Protest at CNN
Hundreds of Atlantans gathered in front of the CNN headquarters to protest the one-sided coverage of the Israeli assault on Gaza which began on Dec. 27, 2008. GPJC/Atlanta joined the protest, calling for an unconditional cease-fire and the suspension of U.S. military aid to Israel.
1/10/09 Children March Against Genocide in Palestine
Children led hundreds of protesters from Woodruff Park to the CNN Center to protest against the ongoing Israeli invasion of Gaza which took the lives of 1,375 Palestinians and 13 Israelis before a cease-fire was finally put in place January 19-21, 2009.
1/19 09 Annual King March in Atlanta
GPJC members joined thousands marching down Peachtree Street to the KingCenter calling for justice for Troy Davis, freedom for Palestine, and the Free Choice Act for workers. For 7thconsecutive year, GPJC distributed hundreds of blue and white peace posters. This year, they declared End the War? Yes We Can! U.S. out of Iraq & Afghanistan No Troops Left Behind.

8/22/08 Colony Square Stand for Peace 6th Anniversary
Dozens gathered for the 6th Anniversary of the weekly peace vigils begun in August of 2002, read aloud the names of over 4,000 U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq, and called for our two U.S. Senators and 13 Representatives to bring our troops home from Iraq and end the U.S. policy of pre-emptive war. Protesters greeted McCain supporters and received honks and positive responses from passing drivers and pedestrians when Sen. John McCain held a fund-raiser at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in downtown Atlanta on August 18.

3/19/08 5th Anniversary of U.S. Invasion of Iraq
A funeral procession of symbolic coffins representing the deaths of U.S. soldiers, Iraqis, and the Truth led hundreds of marchers down Ponce de Leon from Freedom Parkway to the Army Recruiting Station, after which a contingent of protesters carried the coffins to the Recruiting Station door. Atlanta Grandmothers for Peace,who had been arrested two days earlier in their Recruiting Station civil disobedience, spoke to the media.
3/17/08 Ten Arrested Grandmothers for Peace
Ten Atlanta Grandmothers for Peace carried out an act of non-violent civil disobedience with the help of 40 supporters.Marking the 5th anniversary of the Iraq invasion and its unacceptable human cost, they were arrested when they refused to leave the Ponce de Leon Army Recruiting Station after they were told they could not enlist to take the place of young soldiers.
Joining nationwide actions calling for an end to the Iraq War and Occupation, Gwinnett Citizens for Peace mobilized 30+ demonstrators at the intersection of Highway 124 and Ronald Reagan Parkway.

Atlanta activists joined nation-wide MoveOn vigils rejecting Pres. Bush’s veto of passage of a Congressional budget which included a timeline for withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq.Many came to the intersection of Freedom Parkway and Moreland Avenue near Little Five Points.
